Let Your Baby Cry It Out

TUESDAY, March 24, 2020 (HealthDay News) — Could letting your baby cry it out mean less crying later?

A new British study suggests that’s the case.

Researchers from the University of Warwick investigated the issue: They followed 178 infants and their moms over 18 months, assessing how soon and how often moms intervened when their babies cried.

The result? Babies that were left to cry it out a few times had shorter crying duration at 18 months.

For a behavioral development assessment, a psychologist observed play with the mother and a parent-report questionnaire was analyzed at 18 months.

The findings revealed that two-thirds of moms parent intuitively, learning from their infants’ ability to calm themselves, so babies can learn self-regulation. Making distinctions with different kinds of crying can allow babies to learn how to self-regulate during daytime and nighttime, the researchers said.

“We have to give more credit to parents and babies,” said lead author Dieter Wolke, a professor of developmental psychology.

“Most parents intuitively adapt over time and are attuned to their baby’s needs, wait a bit before intervening when crying, and allow their babies the opportunity to learn to self-regulate,” he said in a university news release. “Most babies develop well despite their parents intervening immediately or not to crying.”

The study was published recently in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.

Doctors Say Hospitals Are Stopping Them From Wearing Masks : Health

I’m not surprised, it this isn’t just happening at small hospitals. I work as an anesthesiologist in training at a top academic institution and am actively involved in our ICU’s for coronavirus care. We have worked overtime to acquire as much reusable PPE as possible (respirators) in an effort to conserve current supply and potentially also increase our safety as we are in rooms with multiple COVID patients. We are also intubating patients as a part of the hospital’s airway team. Despite these efforts, we have been banned from using our own PPE. Administrative feels that it’ll set an unfair image that we are able to acquire PPE that is above what the hospital is able to provide and cause other workers to feel unsafe.

We are fortunate that our hospital has a good supply of PPE available for the time being so this may change in the upcoming days as our stock depletes, but from the administrative level, they fear a mass leave of MAs and RNs are they may feel that they are getting subpar treatment. As a whole, our departmental leadership down to our physicians in training have been threatened with termination if they show up to work with non-hospital acquired PPE. If we have learned anything over the last few weeks, its that the criteria for safety will continue to change as we already know how deadly and how contagious this virus really is.

When you have countries like China and Korea with full space suit PPE for providers vs the US who thinks that a week long reused N95, some gloves, and some flimsy plastic gown is considered “safe”. You get into the situation where we now have multiple physician (including multiple physicians in training) infections and deaths across the country and thousands of health care providers infected while working in our hospital environment.

To be honest, this whole process is a joke and the fact that they can hold our career that we have worked tirelessly on for the last 24 years as hostage is the most infuriating part. Unlike some of those who have already graduated like the doctor in this article, if our residents defy an order, we could potentially lose our future means to earn a living and we are truly powerless to stop it.
