challenge: aliexpress or wish. some ppl have been really really happy with the clothes theyve gotten from these places n others not so much. n you have to be really aware of their sizing vs our sizing. the other place is online called full beauty. they have some really nice things esp in their clearence section 🙂

Nailcare Brand, London Grace Celebrates 5 Years In The Beauty Business

Published

on

Kirsten Hazell is the founder of the award-winning nailcare brand London Grace. Not only does she offer on-point mani pedis across London, she has her own line of polishes and then there’s the little extras in the form of coffees, cocktails and gifts that you pick up in the curated stores-come-salons.

And the inspiration behind starting her own firm? Well, it was her stint in the big apple of course, where mani-pedis are commonplace. With a move back to London and spotting a gap in the market, Kirsten set about her luxe-one-stop-shop location for all things nails, and the rest is history, 5 years to be precise. We learn about Kirsten’s beauty business to date and what’s in store for 2020.

Felicity Carter: Tell us about London Grace…

Kirsten Hazell: London Grace is the city’s leading nailcare brand, our 10 stores across London & Essex combine nails, coffee and cocktails to create a social beauty experience. I first fell in love with the mani-pedi experience as a student in New York, but when I returned to London to start my career in consultancy I was disappointed by the lack of choice of nail bars in the city. The cheap and cheerful options seemed to lack in style and service, but at the other end of the market, the luxury spa environments were not accessible or affordable. I wanted to create something that offered the best of both worlds, providing high quality products, refined treatments and friendly service but at an affordable price. This month we celebrated our 5th birthday and I’m so proud of how far we’ve come since we opened our first store on Putney High Street!

FC: What is your USP?

KH: The nails, coffee and cocktails offering is an important USP for London Grace, our clients love that they can enjoy the store as a coffee shop during the day treating themselves to a pedicure and a delicious flat white, or reserve a treatment table in the evening and enjoy catching up with friends over nails and cocktails. The traditional nail bar model is very much a conveyor belt of clients, however the coffee and cocktail bar creates a relaxing, social element to the experience, allowing our clients to take their time and get the most out of the experience.

Another selling point for the brand is our focus on conscious beauty. We’ve developed our own range of vegan and no-nasties nail polishes and nailcare products that we use during treatments and also sell in store. Our manicure and pedicure treatments are performed dry and not only do we believe the waterless method is more hygienic, it’s also allowed us to save over 1.5 million litres of water during the past 5 years. We’re always looking at ways we can be more environmentally friendly, from serving our drinks with paper straws to providing our technicians with cotton, reusable face masks.

FC: Who is your customer?

KH: We’re very proud that London Grace is enjoyed by a variety of clients across the city. Our locations in Canary Wharf, Leicester Square and Bank are in prime locations for professionals who work nearby and value our conveniently timed treatments. Our stores in residential areas are popular with locals and particularly mums, who like to treat their little ones to some pampering (safe in the knowledge that our products are made without nasties). We also see an influx of tourists visit our Marble Arch and Belgravia store during the summer and Christmas season – they love to shop our range of London Grace polishes! A recent growth area we’ve seen is more male clients which is great as we’ve tried to create an environment that’s welcoming for all genders.

FC: What keeps you motivated?

KH: The London Grace team. We’ve grown from just me working in my living room, to a team of 120+ amazing people across ten stores in London and Essex. We have team members who have been with us since we first opened and it’s been a real privilege to watch people develop and grow with the company over the years. There isn’t always a huge amount of progression in the beauty services industry, but we’re really proud to say that over 65% of our office team and manager roles were promoted from within. This keeps me motivated to provide opportunities to those who might not have necessarily been given them elsewhere.

FC: What’s been your career highlight to date?

KH: Winning High Street Entrepreneur of the year at the Natwest Great British Entrepreneur Awards felt like a turning point for me. Sometimes the beauty industry isn’t taken as seriously as other sectors, despite the fact that it provided a direct contribution of £14.2 billion to UK economy last year. I was so pleased that Natwest and the GBEA were giving female entrepreneurs and the beauty industry recognition!

Opening our 10th store was another career highlight, I always had ambitious plans for the brand but as a start up trying to survive on the British High Street can be tough and it felt like a real milestone to hit double figures.

FC: What are the cornerstones of your business?

KH: Aside from the social element and store environments, our emphasis on nailcare is an important cornerstone of the business. We don’t offer extensions or acrylics as we believe they are damaging for the natural nail (not to mention the effects of breathing in the harmful chemicals they omit for our clients and technicians) and we use the highest quality products for the best possible results. Our technicians are trained to advise our clients on the treatment that is best for their overall nail condition, regardless of whether that is our less expensive treatment. We want to create long-term relationships with our clients where they can trust in the professionalism of our technicians.

FC: Where are your branches?

KH: Putney, Clapham, Marble Arch, Belgravia (Victoria), Leicester Square, Angel, Canary Wharf, Shoreditch, Bank and Chelmsford (Essex).

FC: What’s in store for 2020?

KH: I’m expecting baby number 2 this spring so I’ll have my hands full for a while, but the focus for us this year is on our products and we have some exciting launches planned!

Shop the polishes and book via their website.
