Clare Waight Keller Exits Givenchy

Published

on

Every once in a while, a designer comes along who seems perfectly cut out for the moment—the puzzle piece who makes our collective vision of menswear just a little more complete. Clare Waight Keller, who is leaving Givenchy after three years as the house’s artistic director, as first reported by WWD, was one of those designers. As menswear grew more malleable and elastic over the past decade, Waight Keller, who designed both mens and womenswear for the house, was there to stretch it, taffy-like, in more progressive directions. She fashioned men who would wear dazzlingly sequined robes, powerfully shouldered suits in delicate colors like periwinkle and blueberry, and even pearl earrings. This was a new kind of designer for a new kind of man.

“I’m moving towards men’s shows, because I think it now really warrants it,” Waight Keller told Rachel Tashjian in a GQ profile last summer. “I want to start moving the menswear up to that level.” The level Waight Keller is talking about isn’t just the more evolved version of masculinity she showed on her runways: she also installed men’s couture during her tenure, and turned the brand into a powerhouse on the red carpet. Rami Malek, Timothée Chalamet, Shia LaBeouf, and Chadwick Boseman all have Waight Keller to thank for their inclusion on best-dressed lists from the past couple of years. “Focusing on a world based on haute couture has been one of the highlights of my professional journey,” Waight Keller said in a press release.

Waight Keller and Givenchy’s three-year partnership continues the trend of designers popping in and out of famous maisons. Think Raf Simons with Calvin Klein or Hedi Slimane with Saint Laurent: these were designers who were charged with overhauling the vision of the house, did so, and dipped once that work was complete (some of these makeovers stick better than others). Perhaps fittingly, in its press release, Givenchy declared that the house and the designer were announcing “the end of their collaboration,” using the buzzword that has gripped the fashion world recently. It’s a useful glance into the way fashion houses might think about their designers these days: less as a person who single-handedly colors the entire house with their ideas than someone allowed to paint on the already existing canvas.

But like the aforementioned designers, Waight Keller came into Givenchy when it was desperately in need of new direction. The designer took the reins from Riccardo Tisci, who had a very clear, and disparate, vision of what the house should look like. Tisci was the first designer to elevate a streetwear sensibility—via his use of fine-tuned references and bold graphic prints—to the level of European luxury. You’ll remember his iconic shark and rottweiler tees turned up like weeds on every famous rapper in the late ‘00s and early ‘10s. But this vision grew stale by the end of Tisci’s run at the house and Waight Keller came in and helped the house grow up.

Waight Keller’s greatest success wasn’t just the clothes she designed, but the magic she injected into them. The designer was able to imbue menswear with the sort of fantasy that has always guided womenswear. Last summer, wanting to be part of this fantasy and the type of man in its dreamy bubble, I got my ear pierced in no small part because of the dangling pearl earrings worn by almost every model in Waight Keller’s spring 2020 show. “Men aren’t just pieces of roasted asparagus tailored into inky worsted wool,” Tashjian wrote. “Men are creative. They are sensual. The sands of masculinity are shifting—shouldn’t the way men look say as much?” And in Waight Keller’s clothes, they did.
